About this site

The UC Copyright website was created to respond to educators’ and scholars’ needs for information on copyright policies and laws, and how to apply them to academic and scholarly work.

As both creators and users of copyrighted and public domain materials, it is vital that University of California faculty, students, and staff understand and responsibly exercise the rights accorded them under U.S. copyright law.

The information provided here is intended to educate the larger UC community about education-related copyright issues. It is provided as guidance and should not be construed as legal advice.

The UC Copyright website is part of UC’s continuing commitment to provide copyright education and support services to the UC community. It is sponsored by the Provost’s Systemwide Library and Scholarly Information Advisory Committee (SLASIAC), and maintained by the SLASIAC Standing Subcommittee on Copyright Policy.
